Supporting one of Oregon’s most popular natural features, the Smith Rock State Park Visitors Center will provide new opportunities for interpretation and support for visitors experiencing the wonder of the natural area. Developed under a prime contract with Greenworks Landscape Architecture, Waterleaf is the Architect for the new Smith Rock Visitor’s Center. Funded by Bond Funds, approved by the Oregon Legislature, the new Visitor’s Center is a single story, 2,400 square foot facility providing interpretive, gathering, office and restroom spaces for the 690-acre State Park.
Designed to reflect its environment, the building features concrete mass walls allowing for shade shelter and an area of respite in the high-desert landscape. Placed above the rim-rock of the canyon, overlooking the Crooked River, the building is low profile, responding to and respecting the views of the features that have become a rock climbing bucket-list experience. The main building houses the welcoming center and wiill include interpretive exhibits and learning spaces. The restroom building provides accessible services with independent hours from the Visitor’s Center. The shaded outdoor space between offers outdoor areas for gathering and ranger talks.
